Cape Coral is a city located in Lee County on the Gulf of Mexico. Founded in 1957, the City has an estimated population of 217,000 as of 2022. With an area of 120 square miles, Cape Coral is the largest city between Tampa and Miami in both population and area. The city boasts over 400 miles of navigable waterways, more than any other city on earth.

Cape Coral’s history began in 1957 when two brothers from Baltimore flew over the peninsula across the Caloosahatchee River near present day Fort Myers . The brothers, who were real estate developers, purchased a 103 square mile tract with a small group of partners and began development the city as a planned community.

Development continued through the early 1960’s. The public yacht club, a golf course, medical clinic, and shopping center were up and running A major addition for Cape Coral was the construction of of the Cape Coral bridge across the Caloosahatchee River, which opened in early 1964. Before the bridge connecting Cape Coral and Fort Myers, a trip to Fort Myers was more than 20 miles to cross the river.

The area supports many different types of water fowl, gopher tortoises, dolphins, and reptiles. Cape Coral is home to the largest population of burrowing owls in Florida. It is also home to three invasive species: the green iguana, the spiny-tailed iguana, and the Nile monitor. They are each found throughout Southern Florida and generally do not pose a threat.

Weather in Cape Coral features a warm subtropical climate, with an average of 355 days of sunshine per year, and averages 145 days of precipitation. While the wet season is hot and humid with tropical downpours, the dry season (November through April) tend to be pleasantly warm.

As of 2021, Cape Coral is the 8th largest city in the state of Florida by population. Nearly 60% of the population is between the ages of 18-68. SW Florida’s 18-24 age group is growing at a faster rate than the state of Florida and the United States. The median income for a household in the city is $65,000. The economy in Cape Coral is strongly based on healthcare services, retail, and real estate/construction.
